Duration Design Notes – Stats

I’ve mentioned that rolling the number of stats back in Duration from 12 to 8 is on my plan. The stats I’ve come up with as the 8 are:

  • Strength
  • Constitution
  • Agility
  • Reaction
  • Awareness
  • Diagnose
  • Will
  • Psychic Talent

These make more sense to most people. I don’t think anyone’s really understood what Adaptive means as a stat for a character. Diagnose makes sense and provides a description of what the stat does. Intelligence has good meaning, diagnose is good as an activity. “I diagnose the situation”. Smarts has a good instantly recognisable meaning and is another good choice. If that is the case it would look like this:

  • Strength
  • Constitution
  • Agility
  • Reaction
  • Awareness
  • Smarts
  • Will
  • Psychic Talent

An interesting point was made today: if seomthing is governed by a skill and modified by a stat then the stat is not as important as the skill. One could even say the stat is not needed. So the quest is the balance between detail and expediency.

Could one play a game with Smarts, Brawn, Magic and Luck? No skills at all. Of course because after the game has ended we only remember the worst part and all the good bits. I think for most people who care about rules they only want the rules to support their preferences and the things they attempt often in play: for their assumptions to supported.

It’s still a learning process and I’m beginning to think the guts of the lesson is that people prefer published systems. Kind of like the frame on the photo syndrome: a framed photo is always more well-received than a photo without a frame.
